Need a Quieter Muffler

Postby IndyCobra » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:20 am

I know it's heresy to suggest, but I have to find a quieter muffler for this car. I find that I need to wear ear plugs, as do my passengers, every time I drive it. I have a set of unassebled pipes from Brian but they have the same muffler as what's already on the car. This winter I plan to assemble a new set of side pipes. Anyone have a suggestion on a muffler that works that is slightly quieter? I don't want it to sound like the wife's BMW, but I'd like to cut the decible level from 120 db to something more tolerable. Please let me know if you've done anything to fix this and how it turned out. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I found the Chambered Exhaust site on my own yesterday and ordered a pair of 28" packed 3" mufflers. Hopefully that will tame the sound a little.

I've got those same sidepipes myself and they're not very quiet. Better performance, yes... quiet, no.

In my case, running a 482" sideoiler "may" affect DB levels too.

Those mufflers can be installed pointing either direction, obviously. however one way will be quieter than the other. Hard to describe but the inner tube is slotted to let the sound into the packing. The cuts are made perpendicular to the long axid and one side hammered/dented to make a "scoop" feature. If you turn it so the exhaust flows over the back of the scoop - less resistance to flow and louder. If you turn it around so the exhaust flow is "scooped" into the packing it will be a little quieter. Probably not much but some. this is per the folks at Chambered. Hard to describe but when you get them you'll see what I mean.

I'm running those 3" X 28" turned for least resistance/louder. I use ear plugs. People like the sound of my motor. Don't really know of anyone not using earplugs. Or else going deaf :(

Just a thought

Mine have all the packing and are installed in the direction that minimizes noise (scoops backwards). They're still noisy. The sound difference between install directions I believe is negligible. Any noise reduction is usually accompanied by a loss of power too, depending on your engine and "advertised" horsepower.

I like my sound and would not have it any other way. Another 4 or 5 hundred horsepower would be nice though... My Z06 gives the Cobra all it can handle and kicks it's butt over 100 mph.

Undy I started off with some spiral baffled muffins, they are quieter than most & they will never change sounds with time as glass packs do but they also will choke a good motor down. The turn down angle is suppose to change noise levels in the car also I have heard?
Mine are Lobeks or something like that? If you want to go to the trouble & expense I could ship to let you try one or both for comparison but I don't want to sell them in case I get tired of my SS set. Don't remember your tranny but do you have the taller gear for cruise, 1500 sounds quieter at cruise than 2500 or so?

I had the spiral baffled mufflers prior to the Classis Chamber ones. They went into the round file after a chassis dyno run. They robbed me of about 60 HP. They were quiet but just didn't perform. I'm running the TKO600 with the .64 5th. My cruise is between 1500 and 1700, depending.

BTW... I got a real nasty and threatening email from the Spiral Baffle owner after I posted the before 'n after dyno results on Club Cobra

60 Hp! Wow!! I knew my car woke up after I pulled them, I had it on lift awhile so it wasn't as obvious as a pull in & pull out test, maybe they are For Sale!
Numbers are numbers, no need to get upset, I know I bought my set for quite & that's what I got? Quite normally goes With hp loss?
