steering shaft components

Postby MatT » Sun Jul 25, 2010 7:03 pm

I'm replacing my steering shaft and u joints as I get closer to getting my car back on the road. I know the spline count comes in 30 and 36 on the Borgeson website. I only counted about 26 splines on my existing u joint (Borgeson part) going to the Rack. The car was built in 1999. Have ujoints changed or am I missing something on how splines are counted? Thanks

You're correct on the 26 splines. Mustang II steering racks have a 9/16"-26 spline shaft. I think the steering column end is 3/4"-36 spline. U-joints are available in 9/16-26 spline to either double D or 3/4-36 splined shaft.

If you're replacing the assembly you may want to consider a vibration reducing u-joint on one end. You can get all the parts from Borgenson to build the shaft in either mild steel, stainless or polished stainless.

I just got some new Toyo R888s. After they balanced them on the machine they mounted the fronts and spun them up to speed while still on the jack and adjusted weights and re-balanced wheels while mounted on the car. AMAZING results- no vibration in the steering wheel. I was alway queasy about going over 110 on the track due to vibration, now the wheel is dead calm and I feel safer at high speed.

anybody else try this?
