Front Brake poll-

Postby Lakeway Cobra » Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:00 pm

For those of you who are running the "stock" front brakes. Sometimes known as the GM Metric/Granada package......

What master cylinder are you running? Also, which pedal assembly (the new Tilton or the old method).

Mine came with 5/8 MC but I feel it is just too small. Tilton recommends 13/16 with the spec's I gave them.

Just curious what is working for you all.

Going from a 5/8" MC to a 13/16" MC will increase the required pedal force dramatically.

I'm currently running a .700" with higher CF pads.
I ran a 5/8" with the standard pads and it worked great, but the pedal travel was a bit long for heel-toe.
I originally had a 7/8" and the pedal felt like a stump and the pedal effort for quick braking was immense. I mean rip-the-seat-off-the-floor immense.

I run the 1" master for the fronts, the 7/8" for the rears and the 3/4" to the clutch. For pads, I run the Hawk HB119N-594 in front. They are awesome, stopping you easily, but generating tons of brake dust. They are the first pad that let me lock them up with ease.

Thanks. I too feel I have way too much pedal travel for the front.

Are you guy's running braided brake hose? I have the stock rubber hose which may have too much expansion.

Also, I have purchased a set of the CPP Big bore GM style calipers. They have a 2 3/4 bore vs the stock 2 1/2 bore (if memory serves me correctly). So, thinking about what master to try out first with them when I get around to installing them. I have a 3/4 and may give it a shot. Figure if 7/10 is about right for the 2 1/2 bore caliper, then 3/4 is the next logical jump for a larger bore caliper.

Randy,

When I ran that setup I had the 5/8" master with rubber lines and stock GM calipers and the car stopped just fine. I also have the Tilton pedal set. Since you're using a larger bore caliper I recommend you go to the Tilton site and fill out their MC sizing questionaire and see what they recommend. I did that for my new brake setup and the sizing seems to be perfect.

I run power brakes with a 70 Mustang master cylinder. It stops quite nicely.

Thanks Guys.
Randy, on the big bore caliper, I had already contacted Tilton and they recommended a 7/8" MC for it (and 13/16 for the regular calipers). Both seem big compared to what seems to be working on this setup. It may have to be a trial and error thing.

Randy, you have mail.

I have a 2000 model, and thought the piston is a .75", am I wrong ?
How do we find out what size, without taking it apart ?

Kevin,

If you have Tilton master cylinders the size is cast into bottom of the housing. Just look from underneath and you can see the size markings.

I don't mean to change this thread for my questions but, it is related anyway.

From the left, the cylinders are 3/4", 7/8" and although it's hard for me to see, the clutch is 1".
I don't see any piston size on all three, so how do I find out ?

My brake pedal feel is fine now, but if I upgrade to the Baer system, how will it affect the feel ?

15" wheels.
11" rotors.

3/4"- Front brake.
7/8"- Rear brake.
1"- Clutch.

Kevin I have the stock LS masters & 4 corner large Baers, pedal is a touch harder than what I would call normal but still comfortable & works, panic or otherwise .
Now clearing them from the valve stems was a challenge, flush mounts on rear.

Do you have the part #'s from the site.

Any photo's.

Glad you like the pipes, ya need to post a video and pics. !

Kevin, 17" Boyd Coddington Smoothie II's, 13" Baers front & back. I think I got them as a upgrade from LS so will have to look when I get home for a PN, I'll take some pics also.... I have a front easy to see at the moment upgrading to the adjustable upper A arms. Pistons I suppose I ought to be able to rattle off but with reservations I say 2 & 4 ?

Kevin I forgot my laptop @ office but will take pics tonight & post tomorrow.
My two cents though, Brad W has the Willwoods & if I had seen them first I would have gone with them for cosmetics, look at both & see what you think, mine work but the calipers are no way near as pretty & my rears ( I think) look almost stock, pics of mine ( may have some of Brads also) to follow tomorrow .

I have 15's so, your numbers for the 17's won't fit. I would like to see the photo's though.
How much did your setup cost ?

Did you check into the cost for the Wilwood ?

I did speak with Brian about brakes, and he also prefers the Wilwood. I've been talking with Baer brakes as a sponsor, and this is his email what he recommends.

Email-

"We essentially are moving away from the 2-piston PBR caliper in all our systems. It has simply gotten long in the tooth from a performance stand point, but more importantly it has become far less than affordable. We have just upgraded our CSX package to employ our S4 caliper. A rendering is attached showing the Shelby logo and a photo of the front Mustang II rotor, hat and caliper is attached. I have also attached a photo of the rear system for the 9”.

Because of our licensing agreement we do not offer Shelby logo calipers separately. The Shelby logo adds $100 to the cost of each axle set. This makes the front system for the SS4+ $995 Racer and the rear $1395 (photo of the rear system also attached). On the promotional price we have offered you your cost would be $1,510.92 FOB for the front and rear system with Shelby logo.

And you want the optional red powder with black logo finish (a photo in this color combo of the SS4+ is now also attached) the additional charge for the 4 calipers be $139.71 for a total FOB of $1,650.63."

END-

Kevin they have done a upgrade since mine, THOSE look Great compared to my setup. I never compared prices because it was after the fact when I saw the willwoods, I have driven both mine & Brads & our cars are real close except he has a iron big block & I am SB Aluminum, both cars acted the same pressure & stopping.
