Diesel Engine?

Postby jpillars » Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:25 am

I was wondering if it would be possible to place a diesel in the LS427, I mean VW has been making Diesel cars for years and before I was born in 1988, so I thought "hell why not make my own" I love the Cobra body so is there anyway to put said diesel in it?

Uh, sure, anything is possible....but why would you want to? If you want a jetta, buy a jetta.

It kind of defeats the whole purpose why most everyone builds a Cobra. I know not everyone is into the "hot rod" thing, squeeling tires, black smoke, hot chicks, etc, but I would think a diesel engine would be a major buzz kill to both the resale value and the appeal of the car.

It's your money, do what you want with it. It would have to be a rear-wheel drive engine like a Cummins or something like that I would think. I also guess it would probably cost you more than a gas engine, but I don't have any numbers to support that conclusion. And it would be Fugly, but that's just my opinion.

Sorry, I'm not trying to whack you since this is your first post to the forum, but I would think a Factory 5 Cobra would fit a diesel better.

You could put 2 extra large rubber bands together on hooks and push it backwards to go forward if you wanted to. The diesel thing would be kinda cool but I agree with Indy, Why? You can go with any powerplant you desire with these things, that is the glory of it, build it like YOU want it. I would stay with LS myself because of location for me and the ease of construction. If you have any kind of fabrication skills you can do anything you want to these things. Cobra stationwagon! yeah thats it! Purple Haze......

Where there's a will there's a way! Are you wanting to get better mileage? Better torque? Just love the thought of not having spark plugs? There was some talk about a diesel cobra a while back, but it was just talk. I can't find the thread or I'd point you to it. You would need to convert to a rear wheel drive setup so that would mean some major mods to most of todays diesel engines that are small enough to fit under the hood. The frame isn't made to accept a front wheel drive engine so you would have to do some major mods to have it work.

Granted, it might seem odd, but then again, that is how most of hot rodding became what it is today.

Just playing devil's advocate a bit.

First... let me say I agree with IndyCobra... i.e., why? But having said that.... I'd think the Mercedes V6 diesel would be perfect (and clean). It’s also used in Jeep (e.g., Grand Cherokee, Liberty, etc). You might find a relatively new one that was in an accident and the car was totaled. Another option….. if a Ford or Chevy pickup truck diesel. My Ford F-350 has a turbo charged V8 diesel with a Banks Power chip, intercooler, CAI and exhaust. make ~500HP and crazy torque. I pull a 21000lb 5th wheel with it and power is not an issue. Keep us posted if you pursue this “wild” option.

I thought about using a 300 cid Ford inline 6 with a big nasty turbo and only one side pipe. I have much love for all inline 6s. They rev like a sewing machine, plenty of room for bearings, and made like a tank. Such a set up could easily make 600 hp with grotesque torque from 1800 rpm up.

But what would a cobra be without that nasty stereo V-8 sound.
