Verify Slave Cylinder Set-up

Postby IndyCobra » Tue Feb 16, 2010 6:28 am

Attached are a couple pictures of my slave cylinder set-up, which I finished this weekend. After reading all the comments about parts coming undone while driving, I attempted to fix those problems during the install. I'd like your comments on my set-up so if there's anything that needs to change, I'll get it done now while it's easy to work on.

The mounting bolt for the cylinder is safety wired and the double nuts on the end of the shaft have been replaced with a locking nut from my airplane parts bin. I don't think anything is coming off but I do worry about the mounting bracket moving up or down and possibly binding up the slave cylinder. Do I need to add a brace to this part?

It looks as if your engine isnt in the frame yet. Make sure your assembly clears the frame. Also, your fitting will be facing the frame in the position shown in the picture. This may cause a space constrant when installed into the frame.

Bleed nipple will always work better if pointed up too. These slaves tend to get air bubbles trapped inside. I had to take mine off, tilt it up (towards the fitting) while bleeding to get it fully bled of air.

What's the stroke on those slaves?

Kenc, there is a thread on here somewhere with those numbers, Scott I think posted & knows the numbers?
It does have a touch more than the purple one I am running now from Speedway.

I believe the stroke on that cylinder is 1-1/16".

The part that has been coming "unscrewed" is inside the cylinder. The piston has been coming loose from the shaft. It appears that brake fluid is a solvent for Loc-Tite. Some have resorted to staking or pinning the piston to resolve it. With all of the Internet chatter about the problem, it is possible Wilwood has addressed it.

I disassembled the thing and cut more threads on the shaft and then screwed a nut on to lock the piston.

It appears the mounting end is solid. Most installations I have seen mount that end on a heim join that allows movement in case the alignment is a little off. I see no problelm with it ... as long as the piston end is not twisting when it is operated.

BTW....the Wilwood stroke is .25 inch more than other slaves I have seen.

Neat idea, I hope it works. Please keep us posted.

I didn't know that. That kind of explains why a chunk of angle iron was provided in the kit. Can someone post a clear picture of their slave mounting for me to see? I may need to re-think my mounting bracket. I also think I'll take the cylinder apart to secure the piston.

I have a CNC pusher and its about 1 1/16 as well. Still have a gring into reverse unless I put into second first. Not sure what stroke is required but seems like 1 inch is not enough.

Lakeway Cobra / Randy

Can you please give me a call? I e-mailed you, but, you may not have gotten it. I have a question about the oil pan on the engine you got from Reptyl.

Here is the pic of the fixed end of my slave cylinder. It is attached with a helm joint so it can pivot with the movement of the fork. Also the bleeder is pointed up which means you have to run the hydraulic line to the far side of the cylinder.

Sorry this took a couple of days. The site wasn't accepting the pic till now.

Okay, based upon the information provided by everyone, I re-worked the slave and came up with a different bracket and different connection. I think this one will work okay, at least I hope so. Thank you all for helping me to avoid problems before I hit the road.

BTW, I have the engine mounted back in the frame and I have plenty of clearance with the frame and the fuel/brake lines running nearby.

The bracket looks great. Make sure you dill and roll pin the inner shaft. LOC TITE will eventually let you down so the only true fix is to drill it. The Wilwood slave is the only one with enough stroke to work. Ask me how I know. I have a purple one on the shelf.
