Hood fitting problem

Postby Lakeway Cobra » Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:40 pm

Finally getting around to putting my hood on after paint. Wanted to get the carb and engine all sorted out first which I finalized today.

Before paint, hood fit fine with no interference probs. After paint, it hits on the front edge while opening despite many different mounting "tries". I suppose I could shim it up but that would make for an uneven surface which I don't want.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm sure those extra mils of paint are what is causing the problem.

Custom hinges that move the hood away and up?

If it fits in the hole without the hinges mounted, you should be able to move the hinge mount bar forward and\or upward and then move the hood rearward on the hinges. This will change the point of rotation and make it travel more "upward" as it begins its motion. If that doesn't do enough or the hinges hit the body as they rise, you will need to do some "bending" on the hinges to make them "longer" while preserving the angle of the hood attachment surfaces.

Thanks Jim. I have moved the mounting bar up and back some in a variety of positions but no luck. Did not try to move it forward. I'll try that tomorrow. I don't have much room in the bracket slots forward aft so may have to grind them out some.

I have a nice 1/8" seam all the way around the hood perimeter so agree that it should work. It did nicely before the paint.

An eighth inch is pretty tight. You will probably need your hinge point really high to work with that if the edge of your hood is not chamfered. I would try to move it up as close to the underside of the body as possible. Re-drilling for the hinge bar is certainly a viable option. That area is virtually un-observable from either side.

Keep us posted on the progress.

3/16 is probably more like it on second thought. I will try to move hinge point up higher thx.
