Changing my steering rack

Postby undy » Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:08 am

Any words of wisdom?

My 2000 built LS has a leaking, torn boot manual steering rack. I talked to Flaming River about R&R-ing the rack but the cost and effort between fluffing and buffing the old one and putting in a new one was insignificant. So... I have a new one sitting on the work bench. I intend to swap it out this weekend.

As recommended by Brian, I bought the FR1502-9. It comes complete with outer tie rod ends and mounting bushings,

Just looking for helpful suggestions on doing the swap.

Devise a method of documenting and reproducing your toe and wheel "aim" when the steering wheel is centered. This will eliminate the need for realignment.
Beyond that it's just unboltng the old one and installing the new one.

Thanks Jim...

Got her done yesterday, about 3 hours start to finish. I ended up pulling the old rack and taking relative measurements, bushing holes to outer tie rod ends, total length etc. I had to drop/lower my front Speedway sway bar to get access to the steering rack mounting nuts, no biggey though. I also had to re-center the steering wheel. I took it for a test drive yesterday and handling/tracking seemed good. I'll still schedule an alignment just to be sure though...

It's 73 outside right now :D I think it's time for another test drive...

C U guys later...
