Motor is home

Postby Wendell / Lynn » Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:01 pm

Got motor home this week, Jay & I went to see the dyno pulls. Pat the Zepeda Carb. Added 9 Hp over a Quickfuel , not sure how fair it was quick was a 850 mine was a 750? Motor is now a 440 ci..
If I had not ordered the complete rebuild & re dyno my tab would have been almost zilch, Keith gave me most everthing & the cam he got free since this was a run of bad metals. Used same everthing even cam so I guess I will see if my but can feel a few extra cubes?

Anyone here doing Tulsa ?

Still on the Quicklift with no sidepipes in the same state as me but fired up today as a 440 ci!
I liked open headers but these shorty 4 tubes don't do the motor justice! I changed to my polylock motor mounts so not sure if the car is Rocking more because of them or the cubes & motor hitting correct for a change but mirrors don't look too useful @ idle!
Well a trip to Dallas for my baffled or load the car & do it Correct with Kevins SS kit & be done with it first time but that will take till next week if the oilfield let's me?
The girl is Hitting though !

Ok , now the motor is in & test driven. Work,Hunts, & Tulsa & such slowed me down but got my first drive yesterday, tootled at first close to home then hit the road, main & backs then got close to home ( just in case ) & then tucked the ears back! I know i should not be able to feel 13 cubic inches but I guess them & everything dyno tuned with my carb, & my timing not able to drift around but it IS more impressive, rear squats & the frontend is up like a boat trying to get on a plain. Tootling ... seems like it has more lower end & doesn't need downshifting.
Loaded up in trailer & going to C & S for the exhaust that should add both HP & TQ I would think then some final tuning & I should be a happy camper.

P.S. I guess I should draw a line thru the 427

Ok 427 Hiss Kevin SS Sidepipes installed & Tweaked by C & S Perf. ( Rob) & my car is ALIVE & WELL ! :D
Behaves as a normal spunky motor should & the pipes over the baffled / spirals I had woke this sucker UP.
I'm sure Kevin' system was a plus but dumping the baffles I know was. I now know what that Rev Limiter is for, tells me I should have shifted earlier  !
Gotta put my Adj. uppers on & add the Ultra Shift & maybe I might get a 1/4 pass for some numbers, not going though till I can hit 3rd BEFORE the trap !

This MUST be My Year in the barrel, installed my adj. Uppers & added my Ultra Shift fluids to the TKO & was gonna get aligned today...
Lowered the quicklift rolled outside & cranked to a missing engine, thinking fouled plug or two & came close to driving but decided to pull inside for a visual, nothing visible & tried to crank again with a no go.
When does it STOP !

Wendel,

In Texas, there are certain things we do to change our luck, especially a long streak of bad luck like yours.
Do you do these "things" in Arkansas? If not, go on over to Texarkana and I'll meet you there.

You have had more than your share recently...bad luck that is.

Keep us posted on what you find.

I feel sure it's something simple.

Wendell,

I'm sorry to hear your having trouble with the new motor. It's probably that good-for-nothing aluminum block! I hear those things can be real trouble!! Look on the the bright side, at least you weren't riding with Jack when he crashed.

I agree with Jody and it's probably something simple. Just remember, my offer still stands to take that thing off your hands and I'll even pay the freight. :D

Well I know I look like some of those folks on Facebook Farming & Soooo many post of what they are doing..
BUT
Jody I may need directions to The Texas side of Texarkana.....

Randy, did U want just the block, motor, or The Whole Dern Rig .....

To ALL, I waited all dang day for it to cool off & take a little tootle, it did ( somewhat ) & i fire it up, cold so not expecting the world yet but get out to the end of driveway for a warm up & NOW ANOTHER DAD BLAME ISSUE..... still in the dang head scratching mode here but...
cranks, thinks about idiling but at 500 or so (but not sure it would last) rather than the 1000 to 1100 it was set at, stumbles ALOT, not really missing as before but weak. I have noticed fuel pressure is at 3 to 3.5 lbs. rather than the 6 it should be at ( Eldebrock internal regulated) & Lynn in the house can tell its not hitting correct ( heard me prepare to leave & went after her phone). Too dang HOT to get on the road for a break down so not sure what could have happened?
On the one dad gum plus the steering felt almost " BROKE" like Jodys car in the driveway but can not say Randy on the Ultra Shift with a total of about 30 yards.....

DID I ASK.........When When WHEN DOES IT STOP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wendell,

This may be the wrong thing, but have you checked the charging system and battery voltage? I assume you have an electric fuel pump and if it's down on pressure it may not be getting enough voltage. The MSD boxes also need proper voltage to function and I've had them act up with a low battery.

Wendell,

I thought it would stop after engine #1. Then I thought it would stop after engine #2. Then I thought for sure it would be after Engine #3............chapter 4 is still being written!

Wendel,

I have some friends in Texarkana who can direct us  Call when you decide to go

Randy's idea is a good one especially as long as the car has been idle - or maybe some trash in the fuel line
(dirt dobbers or the like) that accumulated when the lines were disconnected and the engine out.

Keep us posted.

Postby Wendell / Lynn » Mon Aug 02, 2010 7:26 pm

Well here is my daily Facebook post............

My fuel pressure was @ this number when I lost the cam so I really wasn't too much that direction & because my first fix was electrical ( & some nut always does too much too tight & put a dent in the new coil had me thinking internal short) I was still programed at looking that direction but this evening all holes seemed to be firing it just stumbled & sounded flat but I raised the breather & saw fuel trickling from one horn but if I waited for the shop to clear out then pulled the site plug it was level ( trickle effect!) but if I cried & stayed with it & checked at shut down it was FULL( NEVER did it SMOKE !
Ran it dry , whispered sweet nothings to it with a brass hammer, & she fixed herself !!!!
Took a DRIVE FINALLY! I guess I got the alignment pretty close because it did everything great, not sure why it is smoother & with less effort?
Ultra Shift.. I wanted the world but could not wish it fixed till the turn home, seems like it might really be showing some impovements?

Kinton I really did think when I posted .... well atleast I have only had to pull engine one time ( so far) & I was thinking you had two or three under your belt.
Dang Jody I guess The T Town trip will have to wait !
Wendell / Lynn
Now I gotta go wash my eyes out , they are flooded also!

Along the lines that Jody mentioned - junk in fuel - I took mine out for short run last month. Started sputtering, dying. would immediately recrank nad run about 50 yards fine. sputter, etc. Got it home nad pulled the front fuel filter and found "some trash in it. Pulled the rear and flushed about a tablespoon of trash out. flushed and all is right with the world again. I'm gonna clean thenm out at least twice a year.
