Randy,
One think you and anybody considering building a LS should keep in mind, you do not just buy a LoneStar you buy into a fraternity of people who have and will rely on each other to achieve a common goal the construction of dreams. Wendell, Round Rock, Aggie Jack, The Elegant Texan, X, myself and a number of others all went through our build together all supporting each other to make sure each and every new LS that will be built is better than the last.
Enjoy the experience and drive it like you stole it.

Lone Star was well represented in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Mid America Shelby meet.
In the car show on Sunday, they placed first and second in their class. John Ross took first and Wendell Perritt won runner up. I know Lone Star LS 427's finished in the top three the last two years in a row for sure.
I am not sure how many cars were there, but I would speculate over two hundred in the show and probably half that many at the road race course in Hallett that were not in the show.
John Ross also won two rounds in the FE drag race competition before noon on Saturday with his Keith Craft FE stroker engine. They told him it would be three or fours hours later for the next run. It was so hot he chose to go back to the hotel and drink margaritas in Texas Cobra Corner of the parking lot and play poker in the casino (about a mile away) and not continue on in the race.
We had a great time although it was very hot, but we kept cool with a margarita machine Wendell had rented.
This is a neat event and loads of fun. It would be great to get the rest of the group up there next year. The Tulsa Chamber jof Commerce said the event brings over 35,000 people to Tulsa.

Skuzzy: I did put on a good coat of permatex "the right stuff". I ran the water pump for a little while and NO LEAKS! We'll see how it does when I get it heated up.
Ken: I filled at the highest point I could get to which was into the tube on the rear passenger side of the intake. It's the place that had all the ugly brass fittings. What would be the best way to burp the system? I ran the water pump which seemed to get some air out because radiator level dropped.
Also, does anyone have any engine break-in secrets? I have heard to do 3 or 4, 15-20 minute runs of quick accelerations up to 65 mph and fast decelerations to seat the rings, changing the oil after the first one to get rid of any shavings. Anybody have a good big parking lot to be able to do this in? (possibly secluded) _________________

Alright, I'm taking bets on where my next coolant leak will come from!
The coolant leaks have been an interesting development. First there
were leaks in the rear of the engine. I got some new fittings to fix
it. Second there were leaks on the sides of the engine from the
freeze plugs. Had to replace 3 plugs that were leaking badly. (who knew they needed a sealant!!!) A leak in the front of the engine started next. I had the wrong gasket on
the thermostat housing. Luckily I had the right one from another intake (yes I have a junkyard spare for parts) and threw it on which sealed it up. Lastly there was a slow drip coming from the back of the engine behind the transmission. I was going to use a stop leak
product that melts and fills the crack but my brother talked me out of it. He was worried it would constrict flow and make the engine run hotter. I did some searching and there were some complaints about thermostats sticking closed so I pulled everything off. I went ahead and did the remaining 5 plugs to be safe and I THINK all the leaks are taken care of. Oh well...it's almost back to where I had it last week.
I did get some practice stabbing the transmission. It is not very fun at all. The other fun development is that I found that I can't drop my transmission! I didn't think about it till I had to do it, but the fuel and brake lines go under the mount on the transmission which block it in. Anyone using a T-45 or a transmission make sure to route your lines up very high in the transmission tunnel or you'll be fixing it later. Next time I need to drop the transmission there will be a little surgery on the lines. _________________

I replaced all the melted wires. After several hours of fun last night tracing wires I think I found the ground fault. It appears to be the alternator. I still have a bunch of stuff disconnected so I am not sure if that is the only one. I am reassembling tonight and find out. I put my multimeter inline with the positive battery cable and it was showing over 13v and 9a with nothing on in the car. Once I disconnected the alternator it went to 0. _________________

Two 225/45-17 (on the front of my car in pic)
I have 40 miles on them. McKinney to Plano to McKinney.
Two 245/45-17 New still have stickers on the tires. I will need to dismount them from FR500 rims. Never out of dark, controlled temp storage.
Bought these to autocross and drive spiritedly around on the street. VERY smooth, yet firm ride.
Pick up in North Dallas (will not deliver)
$90 per tire. $175 per pair. $325 for all.

Looks like my old Mustang's wiring harness before I installed a new one.
Spend a few bucks on a Ron Francis "Bare Bonz" harness, and start fresh. I have installed 4 of these in various restorations--including my current '70 Boss 302 build--and I have had zero problems. My Lone Star will be my fifth "Bare Bonz" wiring harness. Sachse Rod Shop stocks them on the shelf.
Glad to be of help if you need anything.

I love the car and mechanically it is very reliable but every time I look at the electrical I am amazed the damn thing ever ran. I have bigger problems than I thought, the ignition switch wire is just one of them. I really dug into it tonight and found more stuff. I took some pictures and will post them in the morning.
I have one charred wire on the constant positive bus on the back of the fuse block. That wire just goes to no where and is abandoned in the loom with the wires that go to my coil and carb. It is in the loom and is cut just below the brake/clucth master cylinders. It looks like there were two positive wires (one to the coil and the other to the carb) at one time and now this one was just cut off and the other positive wire is split and goes to both the coil and carb.
The broken wire I found going to the ignition switch is actually split off from the positive feed from the alternator. That positive line from the alternator is split at a connector just before it goes on the same bus on the back side of the fuse block as the charred wire. That doesn't seem like it would be the best way to wire the ignition switch.
The third and last wire on that bus on the fuse block goes to the starter solenoid. There is a large fuse in the engine compartment that is in line with that wire. The terminal and wire that goes from that fuse to the solenoid is melted at the fuse. The fuse did not blow.
It is amazing anything works at all, who knows how many other problems are just waiting for me. _________________

Kinton, Larry, Randy and Ben could make it. Kinton, Larry and Randy drove the cobra's. Ben wished he could have. Found out ben is close, dang freeze plugs set him back a day or so. Kinton was still bummed about missing college station and galveston. Randy and I stayed another 2 hours after they left just talking. We were probably just putting off the inevitable. Drove home and was melting. Today Houston was 102 degrees with a heat index of 109. My car temp got all the way up to 190. I think that is great and couldn't be happier. I could spend hours if not days talking with the cobra friends. Can't wait till the next big get together. Conroe or March TCC.

Yep, you cannot measure any current drain across the battery, you have to be inline with either the negative or positive terminal.
I did not catch you had a multi-meter. You can set it to measure either voltage or amps for testing for current drain. Remove one of the battery terminals, place one lead of the multi-meter on the battery terminal, then touch the other lead of the multi-meter to the removed battery lug.
If you see any current or voltage, then you have a short in the system somewhere. If the voltage/current is really low, then the short could be through a load in the system.
Probably not a dead short or many things would fry. _________________ Born with a wrench in one hand, a pair of pliers in the other and a belt made from baling wire, I am ready to rock!

Normally, to measure current (amps) through a circuit with an ammeter, the circuit would have to be broken (interrupted) and the ammeter inserted between the separated wire ends.
If you measured current this way and showed amperage with nothing turned on, I would suspect a short circuit. _________________

I measured voltage and amperage at the battery between the two posts and also at the starter solenoid between the constant side and the frame. That doesn't mean there is a short. I just wanted to rule out the battery and the main running from the battery to the solenoid. And since I had 12v at the solenoid I know I have a good chassis ground to the battery.
It has to be the wire under the dash that runs from the fuse block to the ignition switch, it should be 12v constant and was around 4v. I played with the wire until it was just right and I had 12v at the switch, the car started right up. A new wire will be pulled tomorrow night and I will go from there. _________________

Batteries in a good state should read 15V at the terminals. Each of the 6 cells is 2.5V, not 2.0V. If it is reading 12.8V, it sounds like the battery might have a dead cell.
When the engine is running at 2000RPM, the battery should come up to 15V pretty quickly.
General information aside, either you got really unlucky with the battery and/or alternator, or you have a ground leak. A low powered device always running.
You can check that with a watt meter. With everything off, there should not be any draw off the battery. If you do not have a watt meter, or are not sure how to hook it up, then take a low power 12V light bulb, disconnect the positive lead from the battery and place the light bulb between the battery terminal and battery lead. Make sure you are in a very dark place. If the light bulb glows at all, you have a ground leak somewhere.
Just a thought. _________________ Born with a wrench in one hand, a pair of pliers in the other and a belt made from baling wire, I am ready to rock!
